Ashton Phillip

What did you have for breakfast this morning?

Bananas and bran flakes.

Tell us a little about your education.

I went to Thorn Park Deaf School in Bradford till I was 11, moved to Heaton Middle School (PHU) because of poor education and then went to Beckfoot Grammar School PHU (Partial Hearing Unit) in Bingley, where there were only six deaf pupils. After school I studied graphic design at the University of Central Lancashire.

How did you land the job with VEE-TV?

Being romantic and funny in front of camera!!

What do you like most about the show?

I love the PULSE films because deaf film-makers have great talent and I'm interested in film-making.

What do you do when you're not working for VEE-TV – for money and for pleasure?

I'm doing graphic design freelance work at the moment and I do voluntary work helping deaf children at deaf schools. I would like to help them to achieve something.

Had you always wanted to work in the media?

No, but I'd always wanted to be an actor in a panto all my life! At the moment, I want to get into the media more.

How did you get started?

I'm more passionate about acting than presenting because I've wanted to be an actor all my life, so I thought the presenting would be a step in the right direction, and that's why I applied for the VEE-TV job.

What do you think is the most important issue facing the Deaf community at the moment?

I think the media is important for the Deaf community because it has the potential to help deaf people to develop a strong Deaf identity for themselves. It can also help the hearing world to learn a lot more about the Deaf world.

What are your ambitions?

I want to achieve everything I can achieve, not just one thing.

Who's your hero or biggest influence?

Ian Wright is my hero because he is funny and unique, and Martin Luther King is my role-model because he influenced me to be strong-minded about rights and equality.

Can you recommend something that you really enjoyed recently – book, show, film, website, whatever?

I really enjoy doing website design, organising parties/pub crawls for the Yorkshire Pudding Gang (YPG) and watching news on TV, because I want to know what's happening in the world.

What's your perfect day?

For Arsenal to win the Champions League, to propose to a woman I love, and for Manchester United to be relegated at the same time!
