Tell us a little about your education.
I attended Mary Hare for five years and did a foundation course at Hertfordshire
University for a year afterwards. Then I went to the University of Derby
and got a degree in textiles design. I did two months' work placement,
one in millinery and one in a tailor-made suits company. I applied for
the researcher post and here I am!
What do you like most about VEE-TV?
The fact it is so appealing to watch – all the different formats
and styles make VEE-TV upbeat and funky. We tackle all kinds of issues
and entertainment that are important to our audience, so they feel they
are part of it too.
What do you do when you're not working for VEE-TV – for
money and for pleasure?
I make textiles creations – I go mad on my sewing machine and
see what I can come up with! For pleasure, I love riding, shopping, socialising
with my friends and being with my family.
Had you always wanted to work in the media?
I did media studies GCSEs and did badly in it! I never thought about
working in the media, till I thought to apply for the researcher job
when it came up. Grab every opportunity you can get!
What do you think is the most important issue facing the Deaf community
at the moment?
Access and equality: good communications – more interpreters for
hospitals, etc; good education, as mainstreams are taking over; and for
BSL to be recognised as it is already recognised in many countries.
What are your ambitions?
One is to travel around the world and explore different cultures. Another
is to set up my own business – a gallery showing deaf artists'
creations. Mainly, to be happy in what I am doing in my life.
Who's your hero or biggest influence?
I would have to say the people I was surrounded with while growing up,
which is my family, my best friends, and memories of my pets. I am still
surrounded by the same people now, as well as new friends I have made
along the way.
Can you recommend something that you really enjoyed recently – book,
show, film, website, whatever?
I have recently done a BSL level 2 exam and completed the course, and
I recommend anyone to join a BSL level 1 or 2 course. I really enjoyed
doing the course and I have learnt a lot from it. It not only improves
your sign-language skills, but increases your knowledge of regional
differences and of the history of sign language. I feel I know my Deaf
identity a lot more than before – who I really am and the kind
of world I live in.
What's your perfect day?
The weather is warm and the sun is shining. I'd have lunch with my best
friends and then a long afternoon shopping with them. Then get ready
to go out for the evening, all glammed up and ready to party all night
with the girls!
