Tell us a little about your education.
A Mary Hareite born and bred, and proud of it! Went to Preston University
and did a degree in English lit and American studies.
What are your favourite and least favourite parts of the job?
Favourite – all the people I get to meet and the lovely team at
VEE-TV. I also love going off on location. Least favourite – the
fact that you work 24/7; you never switch off! All social events
are a goldmine of potential contributors!
What do you like most about the show itself?
I like it when we contact other countries by webcam. It's always fascinating
to find out about a different country and their culture.
What do you do when you're not working for VEE-TV – for
money and for pleasure?
I write guest columns for a microsite on Auntie Beeb, www.bbc.co.uk/ouch.
Always on the lookout for media work though! For pleasure – I love
going out and meeting new people, reading, travelling and going to the
cinema.
Have you always wanted to work in the media?
For as long as I can remember, but I originally wanted to be a writer.
What advice would you give to young deaf people interested in working
in the media? What qualities do you think you need?
You need to be enthusiastic and friendly and able to bond quickly with
people. You have to be prepared to work unsocial hours and always be
cheerful no matter what! If you're good at making tea and coffee you
have a definite advantage!
I would like to see more deaf people working in the media. It would
mean more opportunities in the future and improvements in access and
awareness.
What do you think is the most important issue facing the Deaf community
at the moment?
BSL recognition on a national basis – it should be taught on the
national curriculum to increase awareness.
What are your ambitions?
To own my own independent production company and have a string of awards
under my belt!
Who's your hero or biggest influence?
Sad, but true: my family. They have supported me all the way, regardless
of what decisions and mistakes I may have made!
Can you recommend something that you really enjoyed recently – book,
show, film, website, whatever?
Any Bill Bryson book, and you can never go wrong with Lord of the
Rings !
What's your perfect day?
My perfect day would be back home in Bournemouth, away from the smog
and bright lights of London. I'm a country girl at heart! Ideally this
would be with the current lad of my dreams – they change on a weekly
basis: Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom, mmm ...
