PULSE

Ayesha Azfar: Senses of Direction

Senses of Direction is based on one of Ayesha's poems. She had been thinking about turning the poem into a film, so when PULSE got in touch she jumped at the opportunity.

Moody and atmospheric, without a straightforward narrative, the film is about driving around at night in a contemplative mood. Its visual inspiration was Ayesha's local area – the places she often drives through.

Not everything went smoothly on the shoot – Ayesha ended up starring in the film herself when the actors dropped out the night before! 'It's very difficult making a low-budget film, as you can't pay the actors,' she says. But Ayesha thinks it may have turned out for the best, because the film ended up with a more personal feel.

Ayesha says she would like to make a follow-up to Senses of Direction, or make other films based on poems. 'I would love to carry on film-making once I have recovered from this one!' she says. 'I had a lot more confidence now, and I know what to expect, which makes it easier.'

See Calling the shots for information about other resources for deaf film-makers.
