PULSE helped Sam make his first film, bursteardrum, two years ago. Now Sam returns with a new film, Tricks.
Tricks represents a new style of film-making for Sam. 'It's the first time I've really spent time inventing and developing characters and writing a script that really reveals something about them,' he says. 'It's about a movie producer who likes no-strings sex with prostitutes. One day, he meets Chardonnay, a call-girl with a difference.'
So how did he get the idea? 'I just started thinking about the possibility of a deaf prostitute,' Sam says. 'It snowballed because this was a concept with loads of opportunities for a script that would explore deaf culture and awareness from a fresh, radical and perhaps controversial angle.
'The shoot was one of the best I was ever involved in. We held auditions for the actors, and the cameraman was great. I think the script is one of the best I've ever written. With encouragement from my producer, I stayed focused on the characters of Tricks and I ended up with some of the best dialogue I've ever written.'
So what's next? 'I'm currently working on a feature-length script about the dark side of girl- power,' says Sam. 'I'm also working on a music video and another short script about the devil. But most importantly, I'm helping set up the forthcoming Vision Sign Bristol Deaf Film Festival on the 4th and 5th of October. Full details will be announced soon and submissions for short films are open now.'
