What did you have for breakfast this morning?
Banana, yoghurt and cereal, along with a glass of water and a glass of
orange juice.
Tell us a little about your education.
I'm a Mary Hare girl! I was there for seven years and I treasure some
of my best memories there! After school, I went to the University of Leicester
and completed a degree in psychology and sociology.
How did you land the job with VEE-TV?
A friend forwarded me an e-mail from the DeafUK job page advertising
vacancies at VEE-TV and the rest is history!
What are your favourite and least favourite parts of the job?
My favourite part of the job is that I get to meet people and go on locations,
and also the atmosphere of the VEE-TV team is cool! My least favourite
part of the job is having to wake up real early as I'm a night-owl at
heart!
What do you like most about the show itself?
I like the vibrancy and the energy the show produces, and finding out
the views of young deaf people from around the world via webcam.
What do you do when you're not working for VEE-TV for money
and for pleasure?
I'm a registered model with the VisABLE model agency and I model whenever
the opportunity arises. For pleasure, I go clothes SHOPPING! I also enjoy
travelling and seeing friends, going to bars, reading books and watching
films when I have the time.
Have you always wanted to work in the media?
I have always had a keen interest in the media since I did a media-studies
course at school. This is my first trainee researcher job I finished
university last summer.
What advice would you give to young deaf people interested in working
in the media? What qualities do you think you need?
You need to be passionate about what you do, be ambitious, be determined
and be up for the challenge. The qualities you will need are creativity,
innovatory and quick thinking, a good sense of humour and being able to
cope under pressure.
What do you think is the most important issue facing the Deaf community
at the moment?
I think it is important for deaf people to achieve equal rights and access
to everything such as public services and subtitling on TV and films,
and of course recognising BSL as our language. Recognising BSL would improve
access for deaf people and increase deaf awareness.
What are your ambitions?
To be successful, do well for myself and enjoy life. I also want to travel
all over the world and experience different cultures.
Who's your hero or biggest influence?
My heroes and biggest influence are my parents... they are always there
for me. They are my best friends.
Can you recommend something that you really enjoyed recently book,
show, film, website, whatever?
I worship Sex and the City! It is a fab TV show! I love the fashion
and men in it! So if you haven't watched it, you're mad!
What's your perfect day?
My perfect day would be going on a shopping trip! After shopping, eating
in one of the best restaurants and finishing the night off by relaxing
in a scented bath!
