Travelling into Trouble TRAVELLING INTO TROUBLE

Friday 20 August, 2.25am

Foot-long worms writhing about under your skin, maggots feeding on your flesh while incubating in scabs on your shoulder and people vanishing in the mountains never to be seen again.

While travelling the world is a life-changing opportunity for millions of people every year, some have an entirely different experience fraught with danger, one that’s far removed from the paradise they expected.

Travelling into Trouble exposes the horror stories of travellers who have fallen foul of their unfamiliar surroundings and cultures, contracting illnesses, getting lost in rain forests and even being kidnapped at knifepoint.

Their experiences prove that nobody is immune to every danger when visiting another country that has its own diseases, social etiquettes and political systems. For these reasons, it is vitally important that any traveller prepares for their trip properly.

If you are Planning a Trip, we have compiled a list of links and resources to help you prepare. By arming yourself with as much knowledge as possible before embarking on your travels, you can ensure you stay as safe as possible, wherever you go.

If you are a traveller and have experienced any problems while away, or you are the family or friend of someone who is missing abroad, Dealing with a Crisis has a list of links, books and organisations that can help.

Finally, check out our Travel Bugs article in Health for vital tips on staying healthy if you’re thinking of travelling to an exotic or tropical location.
