Psychologist's View - Leadership Styles

Who wants to be the leader of the gang then?

Day Two in the House, and the housemates' airline task has forced the gang to choose different roles. According to psychiatrist Dr Gareth Smith, this task has made several leadership styles emerge.

Paul, says Dr Gareth, has taken on the role of "authoritarian leader," perhaps an error on his part as they tend to become unpopular. However, when an authoritarian leader is removed from the group, the rest of the members usually become unproductive.

Caroline's leadership style is more democratic, says Dr Gareth; "she doesn't take it for granted she should be in charge. And because of this her group remains task orientated and productive."

Shaneen tends to take on the role of the emotional leader and provides comfort and encouragement to the group. She has become a kind of therapy figure - the maternal one.

According to Dr Gareth, "psychologists have found that in a high risk task situation, a group requires a leader who works well under pressure." If the housemates are to pass their tasks successfully, they need to have someone who takes control.

But which housemate should be leader?
