Psychologist's View - Careless Whispers

Gossip reaches epidemic proportions in the Teen Big Brother House….

By Day Eight in the Teen Big Brother house, gossip has become almost the only form of conversation, according to psychiatrist Dr Gareth Smith.

He says, "Every housemate has their own code of morals and beliefs and it's through gossip that these have been expressed."

Paul and Tracey have been the most frequent gossipers in the House.

"Their private conversation allows them to test each other to see if they hold the same beliefs," says Dr Gareth.

"While gossip is useful and makes up two-thirds of daily conversation, it is also a double-edged sword and fuels paranoia," says Dr Gareth. "For example, even though Tommy says to Caroline that he doesn't like people gossiping, he is also contradicting himself by using gossip to tell people that gossiping is wrong!"

Shaneen tells everyone in the group she finds the atmosphere of gossip so difficult she would be willing to leave. Unfortunately for her, gossip seems to be the only way to survive in the House.
