Focusing on views and experiences of young people in the film provides a safety
net for students and teachers when discussing sensitive issues. Teachers should
familiarise themselves with relevant guidelines and policy in relation to content.
Before viewing
Day 1 - Eight strangers aged 18 meet in Teen Big Brother House. For ten days
they'll compete for a major prize. No contact with outside world. Viewers know
what the prize is, the competitors don't.
A. Briefly discuss how students themselves would feel about participating.
Note key points. What would be positive about it? What would they worry about?
How would they prepare? What would their game plan be?
Depending on the context teachers can either work with the entire film, giving
groups or pairs responsibility for focusing on specific characters and situations,
or view in sections (see outline for timings).
B. Key areas of focus
1. Caroline, Hasan, Jade, James, Paul, Shareen, Tommy and Tracey arrive
2. Background information presented by each on film - see series poster
3. Problem solving - blocked toilet
4. Individual and group behaviour
5. Roles - Psychiatrist's view: do you agree?
6. Discussion on unplanned /unprotected sex
After viewing
Through discussion of B 1 & 2 above, begin to build a profile of each of
the housemates. Devise a grid like the one below, either an individual one or
a whole-class version to go on a wall. Ensure that there is room for development,
eg use large sheets of paper so that you can add more columns.

Analyse problem-solving test - housemates' reactions, approach, individual and
group behaviour. Discuss in relation to the Psychiatrist's perspective. (B 3,4
& 5)
In the light of what is known about the housemates discuss their viewpoints
on unplanned / unprotected sex.
You can invent your own symbols, for example for each of the housemates, the
level of gossip, the set tasks, arguments, etc.
Key questions
Who made biggest impact on students? Why?
Who did they like most and least? Why?
What are students' reactions to blocked toilet and living arrangements?
Have any opinions expressed in A changed after viewing?
