Culture Clash
Just how much do the housemates know about each other's cultures? Not a lot it seems...
The housemates are a mixed bunch and despite their efforts to get
to know each other so far, they still have a long way to go in understanding
their fellow housemates' backgrounds.
First, Caroline came over all inquisitive when Hasan mentioned
he'd just been praying. "So how long do you pray for?"
she asked, while lolling on the couch.
"There's no set time," he explained, before going on
to detail his daily prayer routine.

"You have one prayer in the morning before sunrise
"
but before he could continue, Caroline cut in with a practical consideration.
"That's gonna hard here 'cos you have no alarm," she
said.
He carried on. "Then there's the two in the afternoon between
midday and sunset."
But just as he was about to go onto the night prayer, Jade, who
had joined them on the couch butted in.
"You didn't used to be ruled by Nasser Hussein did you?"
she asked.
There was a brief pause. "Nasser Hussein is captain of the
England cricket team," replied Hasan, deadpan. "And I
am not Iraqi." Jade fell about laughing at her gaff.
Later, while all the others were in bed, James and Hasan were up
talking, again about cultural differences.
"There are a lot of people here I wouldn't have met in the
outside," said James.
Hasan, however, is used to a more metropolitan life. "Because
I live in London, you see people from every walk of life - every
country, every religion," he explained.
"The most culture I get is a friend who's a Geordie,"
replied the Glaswegian.
And with that the pair went to bed.
