The liver: How to live longer

  1. Drink alcohol in moderation - no more than three units per day for women and four for men.

  2. Don't take more than one medicine without checking with your pharmacist or doctor.

  3. Cut down the amount of fat in your diet - high-fat diets have been linked with an increased risk of gall-bladder disease.

  4. Drink moderate amounts of tea and coffee - (2-3 cups of coffee per day) to protect the liver.

  5. If you're travelling to a country where hepatitis A or B are a risk, get vaccinated.

  6. Practise safe sex and don't use drugs. Hepatitis B and C can be spread through body fluids during sex, or via sharing needles.
