/life/The Real Richard Desmond The Real Richard Desmond

Tuesday 19 August, 3.15am

A fascinating insight into the complex and compelling world of one of Britain's biggest media players.

When Richard Desmond bought Express Newspapers in November 2000, the media world was stunned. How could the publisher of top shelf magazines such as Asian Babes and 40 Plus run such a venerable institution?

In his first major television exclusive, Desmond emerges to answers his critics about his morality, his wealth, his donation to the Labour Party, allegations of editorial interference on his papers and his friendship with the Prime Minister.

Desmond himself recounts his meteoric rise from North London school drop-out to one of the country's leading press barons, sharing anecdotes and answering criticisms of his product, his management style and his character.

He also confronts for the first time the issue of his label as a 'pornographer', and answers the critics who accuse him of using his newspapers to hit back at rivals.

The programme also features interviews with Desmond's former and current business partners and colleagues, and media commentators and celebrities.

These include Express Newspapers Editorial Director Paul Ashford, President of National Magazines Terry Mansfield, Spectator Political Editor Peter Oborne and Jeremy Beadle.
