T4 and E4's June Sarpong on how she coped with her first crush

Q.

Who was the first person you remember being really smitten with?

A.

He was a boy called Steven when I was aged 10. He was really gorgeous and went out with all the girls — except me! And he was in my class at school so I saw him practically every day.

Q.

How did you behave when he was around?

A.

Oh my God, I was so shy!! I couldn’t even talk around him, I just got butterflies and got really nervous. I tried using my sister’s lipstick, buying him sweets and football cards. I even tried kiss chase but he wouldn’t chase me!

Q.

So how did you deal with the let down?

A.

By going out with someone who actually liked me — that was Marlon, he was Maltese. He was the first crush that liked me too. That only lasted a week — but that was a lifetime in those days!

Q.

Any advice for anyone feeling the same about a boy or girl at the moment?

A.

Trust me, five years down the line, you'll think, 'Oh please! What was I so bothered about?' And the nice-looking boys at school rarely grow up to be gorgeous men — I saw Steven not long ago and he was really minging!!
