Barbara Lisicki is a disability rights activist with the Disabled People's Direct Action Network (DAN)

Q.

What are DAN's aims?

A.

To kick ass! DAN is made up of disabled people who have run out of patience with the grey suits full of red tape and nothing ever changing for us. We want and demand freedom and equality for every disabled person everywhere and we take to the streets to get it. No one should be less or get less because they are disabled.

Q.

How and why did you get involved?

A.

Because there was so much discrimination against disabled people everywhere, and governments didn't care and the traditional charities were all run by non-disabled people who thought they knew what was best for us (they don't!). All they did was make us out to be people to feel sorry for. We want to control the messages about us.

Q.

What sort of actions and demonstrations has DAN held and what is your next demo about?

  A.

We campaigned for a proper Civil Rights law for disabled people and for accessible transport. We crawled into Parliament, threw red paint at the Prime Minister's office at 10 Downing Street and chained ourselves to buses and trains. It stopped the traffic big time. The next action is in London on 2, 3 and 4 April 2001, and is under the slogan 'Free Our People' which means that no disabled person should have to live in an institution, or be stopped from doing what they want, when they want, with who they want because they don't have the right kind of support.

  Q.

Why is disability activism important?

  A.

Because it is our voices that need to be heard. We have proved that taking direct action will change things, in the way that we want it to. It gives disabled people a sense of their own power, it's exciting and it proves that you can be part of the solution and not the problem.

  Q.

How can young people help or get involved?

  A.

Lots of ways! You can fundraise. If you can do it for Comic Relief, you can do it for us — and we would love you forever! DAN has no money and we need it to support people getting to actions. You can come on the actions too — all support is welcome. And let us know about any discrimination against disabled people in your area — we do lots of smaller local actions as well as the big national ones.
