Care of Glass, China and Antiques
China
- Delicate china dinnerware (such as tea cups) should always be washed by hand in warm soapy water
- When placing other china in a dishwasher, ensure ample spacing to prevent two pieces touching
- China ornaments should be dusted or wiped with a damp cloth
- Tip: To hide unsightly scratches, use toothpaste as filler and gently rub the marks. The paste hardens in approximately 1 hour
Glass
- Only carry one piece of glassware in each hand. Stemware (glasses with a stem) should be carried by the neck
- Always take your rings off before washing stemware
- Hand wash crystal glasses in warm soapy water
- Before crystal is put away, hold each piece to the light, to check for water spots
- Wipe any spots off immediately because they can leave permanent marks
Antiques & Items of Value
- Remember, even the most apparently worthless piece of furnishing or art may be of incredible value (either monetary or sentimental) to its owner. It goes without saying that antiques should be handled with the utmost of care
- Lift all antiques and treasured possessions by the main body of the object, and not by handles / edges etc. If (God forbid) a valuable piece is broken take it to a professional, rather than attempt a repair yourself
