Answering the door & greeting guests
- The door should be answered by the Butler only, except when he is otherwise indispensably engaged, when the assistant by his authority will take his place
- The Butler should endeavour to anticipate any guests and be waiting at the door for their imminent arrival. Ideally the doorbell should never ring
- If the doorbell should ring, the Butler should endeavour to answer it within 30 seconds. It should never ring more than once!
- When a guest arrives the Butler should try to greet them by their title and name. For example: 'Sir'; 'Lady... '; 'Master... ' (for the son); 'Madam... ' (for the daughter). 'Mr... ' or 'Mrs... ' should be used, if appropriate. Greeting a guest by their first name should never happen
- When a guest arrives at the house, the Butler should offer to take their coat and put it in the spare room, or a cloakroom
- The guest should be taken to a reception room and the butler should inform a member of the household of their guests arrival
- If the guests have arrived for a party, or similar occasion, all staff should take instruction from the household
