Answering the telephone
  • The telephone should be answered within three rings
  • The telephone should be answered with "Hello, the... house/ residence. How may I help you?" You should always address the member of the household's name who the call is for by their title, i.e. 'Sir', 'My Lady', 'Madam' or 'Master' (as above), even if the caller has asked for them by their first name
  • When the caller asks for a member of the household, always say, "I shall see if they are available", so they have the opportunity to turn the call down
