Hinduism is more than a religion or a particular belief. At its heart lies an ethical way of living
as expressed by Dharma. Dharma is God's divine law for discipline and proper development of
human beings.
Hindus follow Dharma as suggested in the Vedas. The Vedas are the original scriptures of Hinduism
on which the entire Hindu way of life is based. However the Vedas are not a centralised text like
the Christian Bible - in fact the most authoritative of the Vedas are those that are passed on by
word of mouth; the Shruti Shastras, as these are obtained directly from God.
As there is absolute freedom within Hinduism for understanding the nature of God, forms of God
and worship, Hinduism is a flexible and free religion. Nevertheless there are certain fundamental
beliefs instructed by the Vedas that must always be respected: belief in God (Parmatma), prayer
(Prarthana), karma (Purushartha), reincarnation (Punerjanma), and kindness to all living beings
(Prani Daya).
