Well, body butters are based around blends of different seeds and nut oils that form an ultra hydrating cream. The seeds can come from a number of different sources, but cocoa is the most common, as are the seeds of different fruits.
The oils are extracted by grinding the seeds or nuts and then mixing together other ingredients to form a rich cream that is very effective at treating dry, chapped skin. Anyone suffering from nut or fruit allergies should take great care to read the ingredients of body butter products as those products with high active concentrations could cause problems.
So what causes dry skin? Well the truth is that there are any number of factors, some of which can be controlled but many that can’t! As people get older the number of sebaceous glands in the skin is reduced, so the body’s natural oils decrease and the skin can’t hold as much moisture.
There’s not much that can be done about that, but a number of other factors can contribute to dry skin, including over-use of soap and water, over doing the sunbathing and having the heating turned up too high in your home.
In order to cope with dry skin you should also be aware of the difference that the season's make. Your skin will normally be worse in Autumn and Winter, so if you are using moisturisers you might want to take notice of the colour of trees leaves and change with the season.
Always be aware that if your skin is concerning you there could be a more serious problem (such as psoriasis or eczema) and so you should always get yourself checked out by your doctor if you have any concerns.
