Violence/abuse criminal and physical violence
The following script contains details of organisations offering information and support to anyone who has been affected by a violent act, whether criminal or not. The phonelines to some of these organisations are very busy, but please keep trying.
Victim Supportline can provide help and information for anyone who has been affected by a crime including violence or sexual assault. It doesn't matter when the crime took place or what type of crime it was. You might not want to involve the police but want someone to listen to how you feel. If you do want to go to the police, they can help you deal with this and can accompany you at court. Call them on 0845 30 30 900 on Monday to Friday 9am to 9pm or Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 7pm. If you want to report a crime, but are uncomfortable going directly to the police, you can call Crimestoppers free on 0800 555 111 (Mondays to Fridays 8am-10pm, weekends 10am-4pm). Crimes can be reported in confidence, anonymously if you prefer, and calls are not traced. Find out more at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
The Monitoring Group offers a 24 hour helpline for victims of racial harassment, police misconduct and domestic violence. Call the free, confidential line 0800 374618 or go to their website at www.monitoring-group.co.uk.
The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority is the organisation to contact for information about the government funded Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme for victims of criminal injury. You can find out more by calling free on 0800 358 3601 (Mondays to Fridays 9am-5pm) or by checking out their website at www.cica.gov.uk.
The National Council for Civil Liberties known as Liberty provides advice on civil rights issues including criminal injuries, police complaints, rights of immigrants, public order and much more in relation to the law in England and Wales. Call their legal advice line on local rate number 0845 123 2307 (Mondays and Thursdays 6.30pm-8.30pm, Wednesdays 12.30pm-2.30pm). The Andrea Adams Trust is a charity dedicated to tackling workplace bullying. You can call their helpline for confidential advice on 01273 704 900 (Mondays to Fridays 10am-4pm), or visit their website at www.andreaadamstrust.org.
RoadPeace provide practical and emotional support for people who have suffered injury or bereavement in a road crash. They can also offer advice on rights, choosing a lawyer and referrals to lawyers. The RoadPeace helpline can be contacted on the local rate number 0845 4500 355 (every day 9am-9pm), or through their website at www.roadpeace.org.
