Dispatches: Profiting from Kids in Care

This script contains information on support organisations for young people in care and other issues raised in the Dispatches programme.

A National Voice (ANV) is the organisation run for and by care experienced young people. If you're concerned about the care your experiencing, whether in a children's home or foster care, call 0161 237 5577 (Mondays to Fridays 10am-6pm). ANV can phone you back to save on the cost of your call. You can also text their mobile on 07736501230 or go the website at www.anationalvoice.org.

ChildLine provides free and confidential counselling for anyone up to the age of 18. Call the free helpline on 0800 11 11 (24 hours a day, every day). If you have difficulty in hearing or in using a regular phone try the textphone service on 0800 400 222. ChildLine phone lines can be very busy but do keep trying and you will get through. Get Connected is a free helpline and e-mail service helping young people find the best support whatever their problem. It's especially good for anyone who has left home. Call 0808 808 4994 (free, every day 1pm-11pm). Their e-mail address is help@getconnected.org.uk or check out the website at www.getconnected.org.uk.

The Who Cares? Trust works to improve public care for around 60,000 children and young people who are separated from their families and living in residential or foster care. If you visit their website you'll be able to link to their new service for carers and young people called Right here, Right now. Visit their website at www.thewhocarestrust.org.uk.

Nobody, even young people, should be working for pay that is too low to live on. If you need help or advice the National Minimum Wage helpline can tell what you should be paid and what to do if you're not getting that rate. You can also call the helpline if you want to make a complaint about an employer you suspect is not paying the minimum wage. Call local rate helpline 0845 6000 678 (Mondays to Fridays 8am-6pm). All calls are taken in strict confidence and callers can be assisted in 30 languages. They have a website at www.lowpay.gov.uk.

The Child Death Helpline offers support to anyone affected by the death of a child, whatever age. The line is staffed by bereaved parents and you can call freephone 0800 282 986 (Mondays to Fridays 10am-1pm, Wednesdays 10am-4pm, every evening 7pm-10pm). Their website is at www.childdeathhelpline.org.uk.

The Grandparents Association support all grandparents with advice on matters concerning their grandchildren, but particularly those denied contact with their grandchildren or responsible for their upbringing. Call the helpline 01279 444 964 (Mondays to Fridays 10.30am-3.30pm). You can also visit their website at www.grandparents-association.org.uk.

If you're concerned about the safety of a child call the NSPCC Child Protection Helpline on 0808 800 5000 (free, 24 hours every day). A free textphone service is in place for people who are hard of hearing on 0800 056 0566. Young people can find lots of useful information at www.worriedneed2talk.org.uk and there's also an e-mail helpline at help@nspcc.org.uk.

The Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service or CAFCASS, looks after the interests of children involved in family court proceedings. It works with children and their families, and then advises the courts on what it considers to be in the children's best interests. You can find information at their website www.cafcass.gov.uk.
