The programmes

Going to Extremes charts the progress of four life-changing experiences involving travel, from marathon cycle-rides across Europe to jungle adventures, sailing trips and globe-trotting with young children.

If you're thinking of taking a life-changing trip or journey yourself, these inspiring stories might help you make your mind up once and for all.

Sailing the Atlantic

Business partners Bob Kerr and Glo Carpenter sailed their boat Serefe 2,700 miles across the Atlantic with a crew of three others. Bob skippered and Glo was ship's cook. Cycling to Gibraltar

Craig and Annick Bishop, along with their children Kiri 7, Anna 13, Lara 15 and Charlotte 17, set out to cycle 1,700 miles in 10 weeks, from their home in County Wicklow to Gibraltar. Craig was in search of a 'Eureka!' moment but the girls weren't so sure about the joys of crossing Europe by bike in winter. More

Jungle living

Brother and sister Pete Cleary and Pam Teale had little contact for the best part of 30 years but made up for it with a vengeance, setting out to spend six weeks in the Amazon jungle, living cheek-by-jowl with a primitive tribe. One aim of the trip was to bring the siblings closer together but did the stress of jungle-life prove too much of a strain? More
