What's your problem?
Life turning point

Forget the mid-life crisis. Change doesn't respect age and life-rattling upsets can zap the status quo at any stage. Think of moving house, shifting school or leaving home. Or getting a job, setting up home with a partner, having kids. What about giving up or going back to work, separation, illness? Life's one long whirl of events, interspersed with odd patches of calm. If change is inevitable, the trick is to accept it and use it to re-evaluate and grow.

Face change

  • Create a help network before you need it. Strengthen relationships. Talk, share, support and be supported.
  • Stamp on negative self-talk, the little voice in your head that says 'I'm frightened,' or 'I can't cope'. Push these thoughts away and focus on the positive.
  • What do you long for, what drives you forward, what's holding you back? Reveal your answers by writing spontaneously for 10 minutes or drawing a picture of your feelings.
  • Remove your head from the sand and think about how best to adapt. Thought flows most readily alongside automatic activities like walking, driving, showering or even washing up.
  • Seek professional help with daunting changes. Everyone has to face life's downside sometimes. Don't struggle on alone. You're human.
