Gay in the UK, 12-15 November 2001

A significant and exciting landmark, the first UK (excluding Northern Ireland) survey of lesbian, gay and bisexual lives profiles what lesbians and gays do and think, as well as how much they earn and how it is spent.

The findings are covered in a statistics-driven news feature and in four film profiles, but this website delves further into the attitudes revealed. In the past, statistics have often been used to justify homophobic attitudes. But for this comprehensive and widely distributed questionnaire, more than 10,000 lesbians, gay men and bisexuals across the UK have found the time to talk about themselves, to tell others and themselves who they are.

It may look just a series of ticks but the questionnaire demanded much more than that. It is about facing past experiences, confronting your present, and imagining the future. In all, 132 questions cover sex, families, relationships, politics, religion, and identity. They challenge misconceptions held not only by the wider population but by lesbians and gays themselves. The survey presents the lesbian and gay community as a powerful and cohesive subculture.
