Shami Chakrabati
As director of the UK civil rights group, Liberty, Shami Chakrabati
has faced some tough challenges since she took over the organisation
in 2003. In the aftermath of September 11, the UK government was
beginning a crackdown on terrorism and instituting major changes
in its immigration policy. This has meant Shami has had to fight
her corner as a campaigner on government policy, both in the courts
and in the media.
In an often difficult environment, the results of her work are
undoubted. She has supported the Romany Czechs and Muslim communities,
fought against British identity cards and looked out for people's
concerns about domestic surveillance.
In many cases, it's Shami herself who's arguing before judges,
lawlords and politicians. But even when she's behind the scenes,
there's no doubt she's a force to be contended with in British
civil liberties. |
