Ten colossal conglomerates dominate the world media. This
number is shrinking all the time, and the corporate baddies
involved have designs to control every aspect of your media
experience. Not science fiction. Welcome to the world in which
we live.
But never fear! The underground resistance is here. The folks
behind
Shivers of Sharing (SoS), a project that debuted in London
earlier this year, think it's time to take control of our media
back from the fat cats – and they're showing us how, one network
at a time.
Shivers brings people together in a variety of real-life settings
to give away, swap and trade their media. CDs, DVDS, hard disks
and iPods – they all get connected in a mini, temporary network,
cooked up there and then by the people who come. Distribute
the film you just cut, your band's latest single or grab other
people's stuff while meeting and chatting with them in person.
You don't have to ask: just arrive and share.
SoS is a user-organised project: you can start your own local
Shivers event complete with your own web page and list.
