Petitions
If you want to show those in charge just how many people feel
strongly about your issue or cause, you could think about starting
a petition. This can also be an effective way of getting yourself
lots of supporters.
Your petition should start with a simple, concise statement of
facts, and end with the position your signatories are putting
their names to. Remember that people have got to have a clear
idea of what they're signing. One of the biggest problems with
petitions is enthusiastic activists getting thousands of signatures
on a form the signatories didn't really understand. No one's going
to listen to that, and it doesn't help build an effective campaign.
Delivering a petition to the right person on the right occasion
can be very effective – but don't forget that personal letters
and phone calls can be just as good. Online tools like iPetitions
have made it much easier to organise petitions and collect signatures.
But don't underestimate the power of the photocopier, clipboard,
pen and paper. Hit the streets! |
