Sarah and Jun
WEEK THREE - SARAH
It's Week Three and Jun is faced with teaching kitchen no-hoper Sarah, a 33 year old investment banker from Kent. Sarah's busy city lifestyle and long working hours have led to her developing a firm attachment to her microwave and she suffers the added pressure of her own mum being a chef.

Before setting foot in the kitchen, Jun gives Sarah a head start by showing her how to use her supermarket for something other than ready meal and introduces Sarah to the fresh vegetables aisle for the very first time.

Sarah is horrified and quite literally paralysed by fear at the thought of cooking. She attempts to cook a chicken stir fry from scratch but one glug of red wine vinegar too many leaves it virtually inedible. Jun steps in and shows her how to use the same ingredient to produce a quick and easy stir fry that Jun proves is quicker to prepare than a micro-wave meal.

Sarah is invited to Jun’s cookery school to begin the serious task of developing her basic cooking skills and shows her how to cook a simple roast chicken dish served with vegetables. She proves to be a bright student and is making progress. Her confidence is still lacking but Jun sets out to convince her that she knows more than she thinks she does.

Jun then invites Sarah’s foodie mum and two sisters to a full on dinner party – cooked by Sarah! As a further test of confidence Jun also invites Chef Mark Jankel. Sarah takes a deep breath and gets on with it. Despite the apparent lack of co-ordination in the kitchen the meal is served to the absolute amazement of her family.

With little time left before the Cook Off competition, Sarah is sent to meet Mark Jankel who is head chef at the respected Notting Hill Brasserie. Mark is a fantastic resource – and gives Sarah a wealth of industry secrets and short cuts on how to simplify things, improve presentation and most importantly avoid disaster. She’s already mastered a roast chicken so Jun shows her an haute-cuisine variation which he thinks will impress the judges and also introduces an eye grabbing starter of scallops.

The day of the competition arrives and the reality hits Sarah. It’s one of the biggest challenges of her life – just three weeks ago she’s could barely turn on her cooker and now she’s going to be cooking off against two professional chefs with years of experience between them.

Jun and Mark believe that Sarah has enough knowledge to hold her own but all they can do now is watch her progress from a secret room. Sarah looks strong but one of the opponents is a clear threat – it’s going to be a test of nerve. Will Sarah be able to hold her own and persuade the restaurant critics that she is as good as the professionals?
