What's your problem?
Making friends

True friends know you through and through. They're with you, laughing or crying, for the killer hangover, the relationship bust-up, the round-the-world trip. Friends give you what your family can't, a shared understanding, a special kind of tolerance and love. Take care of the ones you have, make new ones when you can. Nurture your friends, and they won't let you down.

Keep friendships flourishing

  • Touch base frequently. Short, frequent calls are better than occasional marathon sessions.
  • Never stop showing you care. Pick up the phone, send that e-mail or postcard. Let friends know how much they mean.
  • Friends are not mind-readers. If you're not getting what you want from them – ask!
  • Had a row? Don't let it fester. Admit something's wrong but don't blame or try to justify behaviour. Use communication skills to move on to a more positive plane.
  • Think of the qualities you treasure in others. Develop them in yourself.
  • Give unconditionally, without expecting pay-back. What goes around, comes around.
  • Look at life through your friends' eyes. Don't make assumptions, find out the reality. Ask about their lives, listen properly, reflect.
  • Be your own best friend. Believe in and respect yourself and others will be drawn to you.
