The City Gardener

Vitis vinifera purpurea
Lobelia cardinalis is a member of the bluebell family, a hardy perennial that grows in clumps about a foot across, producing spiky stems of between two and four feet tall.

It has rich purple stems with reddish-purple leaves and produces spectacular clusters of intense, pillar-box red flowers of about an inch across. These form on the end of the tall spires, from spring right through to autumn.

Not especially known for its longevity, each plant will usually survive for about three years but can be grown relatively easily from cuttings or seeds. It’s easy to care for and tolerates full sun or partial shade. In nature grows in marshland, woodland and on the banks of rivers, so is most at home in filtered light with moist, heavy and even boggy soil.

Allium euspernum
A good way of bringing colour to an autumn garden this hardy plant's attractive red flowers appear at the end of August.

Miscanthus sacchariflorus (Amur Silver Grass)
Popular as a screen or windbreak this hardy grass can reach a height of around 2 metres. The grass has stiff blue-green leaves which fall vertically from the outward arching stems.
