The City Gardener

Fargesia nitida ‘Nymphenburg’ (Bamboo)
A bamboo with fine green leaves that give a shade with an exotic twist. It has slender flexible arching canes. This is a big grower and will reach 3 - 4m. Ideal for pot growing where its growth will be restricted. Cold winds will inhibit the growth of the leaves and the plant will lose its lush green look, so giveit a sheltered site.
Hemerocallis 'Golden Ginkgo'
An herbaceous border plant that is easy to grow. Fresh apple-green pointed leaves emerge in spring, by June it produces bright yellow trumpet shaped flowers. It grows to about 80cm high. After a few years the clump can be lifted, split and replanted with plenty of pieces left to give friends. Although it grows very well in damp places it will be happy in a mixed border but it doesn’t like hot baking conditions.
Liatris Spicata
This is an herbaceous perennial that produces narrow grass-like leaves with spikes of fluffy purple-pink flowers held high above the foliage. The flowers are unusual in that the flower spike opens from the top of the stem downwards. It flowers in late summer, early autumn when many other perennials are over. The flowers are very long lasting and last long in water in the house.
Liatris will grow in any well drained soil in full sun, if the soil is too wet in the winter it may rot. The flower spikes grow up to 80cm in height. Cut back the flowering spikes in the autumn, if you like a tidy garden, or in the spring before new growth starts.
