The City Gardener

Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra'
This small tree adds colour to the garden all summer with its dark purple leaves. It is worth it’s place in the small garden as it is interesting all year; in early spring it is covered in a profusion of pale pink flowers and in winter the bare twigs are a shiny black. It will grow in most soils and prefers a light. Bright position to retain the dark purple colour in its leaves.
Betula utilis var. jacquemontii
A birch tree with intense white bark. These specimens have been grown to have branches growing from the base to get more white trunks per tree, although they can be purchased with a single clear trunk. The tree casts a light dappled shade from its dark, rather glossy leaves
Panicum virgatum 'Heavy Metal'
An upright grass that grows in clumps, making a strong vertical contrast to surrounding horizontal plants. It grows to approximately 90cm with an stiff flower spike at the top of the plant. The leaves are bluish green and turn butter yellow in autumn.
