  • When Hitler tried to ban make-up in Germany, German women refused to work. US politicians also considered banning the beauty industry during the Second World War but realised that public opinion would be against them.

  • Western-style perfumes are still sometimes treated with suspicion in Japan as their use is assumed to be an attempt to cover up Westerners' unpleasant body odours.

  • British women use the most foundation of any country in Europe (with one-third of women using a foundation at least once a week).

  • The Roman Emperor Nero and his wife Poppaea used cosmetics liberally, with white lead and chalk to whiten the skin, Egyptian kohl for eyelids and lashes, fucus (a sort of rouge) for the cheeks, barley-flour and butter as a cure for pimples, and pumice-stone for whitening the teeth.

  • In the 1950s 98% of American women wore lipstick; only 96% brushed their teeth.

  • Marie Antoinette washed her face in red wine to protect it against wrinkles.

  • In 1996 the Malaysian government instituted a ban on the excessive use of lipstick, claiming that such practices were a prelude to illicit sex.
