20.   AUSTRALIA -  680,000 visitors

First in our Countdown at Number 20: going walkabout in Australia.
 
It was no holiday for Victorian convicts, but 680,000 of us were transported there last year. And don't the rest of us think they're adventurous… 

Brits who go to Oz think they're more Captain Cook than Thomas Cook . But we’ll let you into a secret: when we get here, we're about as original as an Ikea shelving unit. And just as weedy.

19. NEW YORK - 885,000 visitors

At Number 19, it’s a star from the big and small screen the Big Apple. More than 800,000 of us chased own movie dream last year and forked out around £800 for the privilege.

18. CRUISE - 940,000 visitors

Port Out Starboard Home, Posh With A Capital P.O.S.H.

But in fact cruises are not nearly as posh as they used to be.  They're packages nowadays.  The average cost of a 7 day break is £1,100 and nearly a million of us booked into these massive floating hotels last year.

17. CARIBBEAN - 1,015,000 visitors

Crystal clear sea and white sandy beaches, and nearly everyone speaks English.  No wonder so many of us are dazzled by The Caribbean.  The fact that it's Michael Winner's spiritual home doesn't seem to put us off.

A country on the borders of two continents simply crammed with history.  An ancient country with more culture than a students fridge.  But when we're in Turkey we say stuff that, where's the beach?
