Taking control

Sport is seen by many experts as a way for teenagers and young adults to burn off their anger at the same time as learning to direct their energies and be part of a team.

There are various schemes throughout the country, run on a local basis. A central point of information and advice is the National Association of Clubs for Young People. On its website (www.nacyp.org.uk) it has a directory covering everything from football and boxing in your local area to adventure weekends.

Aimed at building confidence, self esteem and employability through skills the Prince's Trust (www.princes-trust.org.uk or 0800 842 842) is a UK charity with schemes throughout the country. It focuses on 14-30 year olds who are having employment, schooling or behavioural difficulties. One of its key projects enables people aged 16 to 25 to become part of a team of 15 people for twelve weeks, for free, working on community projects, spending time on a residential week and gaining two week's work experience.
