Mike Porritt: Entrepreneur with attitude
Mike is outgoing and dominating, generating a strong social presence.
Like many entrepreneurs he is highly competitive and prepared to take risks.
He is upbeat, self-confident and more than ready to get into the driving
seat. His profile shows that he has many of the qualities associated with the ability
to manage others effectively. His sense of purpose and identity, his
competitiveness, and his desire for leadership all contribute to his
management style.
Macho
Mike's focus on personal achievement drives his interactions
with others. He will probably focus on the outcomes rather than on the
social niceties. He seems very goal oriented and more concerned with
products than people. Forthright and plain speaking, any attempt to win
hearts and minds is likely to be based on knowledge, strategy or expertise
rather than interpersonal sensitivity. This may seem a rather macho approach to
interpersonal relationships.
Mike values learning and education. People
with personality profiles like Mike's often pursue learning and education
throughout their lives (think University Challenge team from the Open
University doing their third degree aged 72!). Mike may or may not have such
academic interests, but he is likely to be interested in technology, the
internet, and in keeping himself up-to-date with developments in his field.
He is an ideas person, curious about his environment and interested in
understanding how things work. He probably has that 'big picture' outlook
that is very conducive to business development and strategic planning.
Sales not service
There are differences between the abilities and characteristics needed to
win new business and the ability to nurture and maintain long term
relationships with clients. Mike is highly sociable and probably has no
qualms about voicing his opinion. This is all good stuff in terms of winning new
clients. But his profile suggests that the balance of his talents weigh
heavily on the selling side while qualities conducive to customer service
and long term client relationships are less in evidence. Perhaps this is an area to
be delegated to others.
Mike and Boss Swap
In a Boss Swap context, there are some characteristics that could interfere
with relationship building and the ability to respond appropriately to the
surrogate team. People with profiles similar to Mike's can be quite wary of
others. To some people he may seem critical and irritable; someone who
doesn't easily forgive and forget. It could be that he sees himself as more
of a people person than he really is, confusing sociability with
interpersonal sensitivity and tact. Mike certainly enjoys being with
other people but he may tend to presume that, deep down, others share his
values. He needs to remain alert to the wide variety of
individual motivations that he is likely to encounter in another business.
