Dave: Visionary Loner

There are two distinctive features of Dave's profile that are likely to have played an important part in his career. Firstly, he is something of a visionary. Secondly, he is a very independent person. Both are characteristics that are often encountered in entrepreneurs and, as with any extreme personality characteristic, they contribute to both sides of the balance sheet when it comes to weighing up Dave as a boss.

Dave is an ideas person. This is supported by his respect for knowledge, his desire to learn and his willingness to keep himself up-to-date with developments in his field. People with this kind of profile will see many possibilities for the development of the business. However, there are also indications that Dave may be susceptible to less rational influences. Some of his visions may stray into the realms of the unrealistic or even the eccentric. The danger is that he may be continually pulled in different directions and have difficulty in keeping strategies on track.

It isn't unusual for people to become entrepreneurs because they have a strong streak of independence and they don't like being told what to do. Independently minded and rather mistrustful, Dave is not a "people person". Being somewhat detached rather than "matey" counts as an asset in a boss. On the positive side, it suggests that he will be very focused on getting the job done and will have no difficulty in confronting staff about any shortcomings. However, he may unwittingly come across as insensitive to the expectations and needs of employees. He may miss out on opportunities to enhance job satisfaction, to raise morale and to cement the staff loyalty.

The main themes coming out of this assessment suggest two demons that Dave may have to wrestle with:
  1. Dave tends to focus on product rather than people. He may appear remote to his staff. He may need to consider working on his interpersonal awareness and impression management. Alternatively, he could consider how to develop managerial structures so that others will deal with these issues for him.
  2. Dave needs to find a strategy to channel his creativity. Dave's ideas need to be kept under control to ensure that only the most rational are acted on, and to ensure that these are fully implemented.
