For many performers, applause is the reward that motivates them to get up on stage and exhibit their talents. Steve Day, however, a severely deaf comedian, can say what he wants to an audience without fear of hearing their response. He's made it his business to find the funny side of living with a disability and is now an established face on the comedy circuit.

Steve works equally hard behind the scenes and is a regular writer for BBC Radio 2's long-running topical comedy show, 'The News Huddlines'. A prestigious appointment for any writer, Steve says his mum is more impressed by hearing the show's comedy veterans deliver his gags than 'anything I've ever done in stand-up'. Although still working as a computer programmer by day, Steve hopes that his stint at this year's Edinburgh Festival will bring him the bookings he needs to go into comedy full time. As far as he's aware, he's the only deaf comedian currently doing the rounds, but as he tells his audiences, 'there might be others, but I haven't heard'.
