In spring 2001, Saira Shah secretly entered Afghanistan, a country of desperate poverty, much of it brought about by its fundamentalist Islamic rulers, the Taliban. Women are deprived of education, medicine, freedom and often of the very means of survival. After the US bombing, Saira again crossed the border to film ordinary Afghans and to find three tormented little girls. Read about her second journey to Afghanistan.

One year on, in Lifting the Veil, Carla Garapedian investigated the story of a woman whose public execution had been secretly filmed in the first film and to see if women's situation had improved after the fall of the Taliban.
