a view of the welsh countryside

Twr-y-Felin

Have you stayed here? Write a review.

Friendly, informal Pembrokeshire hotel in 19th-century mill offering outdoor activities and stunning coastal views.

Five minutes from the centre of St David's and five minutes from the beach, Twr-y-Felin is ideal for those spending time on Wales's beautiful Pembrokeshire coast. It's an outdoorsy place - don't expect a TV in your room - and oriented towards coastal activities, but even the laziest will find something in the area to suit them.

There's an adventure centre on site which can arrange kayaking, surfing, coasteering (which originated here) and rock-climbing, or you can walk the coastal path. It's a two-hour walk (ten-minute drive for the time-poor among you) to St David's Head, Wales's westernmost point.

The hotel ('Tower of the Mill') is based around a converted windmill which was built in 1806 and ground corn for nigh on 100 years before its sails were removed. At the top of the mill tower is Twr-y-Felin's pride, the Tower Room. This circular lounge is the highest point on the St David's peninsula and is a fantastic place to sit back and spin your yarns. A balcony round the outside provides exquisite views either across the countryside or across the sea to rocky islands and, on a clear day, Ireland.

the tower
There is one standard room in the tower, with the en-suites in an adjoining building added at the start of the 20th century. The rooms were refurbished in 2002 and are simply furnished with white Egyptian cotton and wooden blinds.

Twr-y-Felin is the height of informality. Leave the tie at home and bring the family instead. From November to March, it's self-catering only and is usually let to one or two groups at a time. The rest of the year there is a restaurant serving home-cooked meals. Breakfast is included; three-course dinners cost around £15.

Room rates : B&B rates are £30 per person in standard rooms (shared washing facilities) or £34 p.p in en-suite rooms. 3- and 4-person rooms are cheaper.

Rooms to ask for: No particular room stands out, but there's one in the tower, with round walls, sleeping four in bunk beds.
