Nestled among volcanic mountains, in the charming coastal village of north-west Tenerife, Hotel San Roque is a renovated manor house which combines the best of old and new design and even houses its own small collection of art.
Only thirty minutes from the airport at Tenerife North, the San Roque is a family-run hotel a world apart from the built-up resorts of southern Tenerife. In the picturesque setting of Garachico, the bold, burnt red exterior is in sharp contrast to the pristine white of the houses that line the cobbled village streets
The interior of the main building is predominantly wooden; the deep brown timbers adding to the warmth of the red colour scheme. The centrepiece of the traditional, and original, courtyard is a huge, silver futuristic structure which doubles as a fountain. Overall, owner Dominique Carayon has blended old and new successfully, making the most of the seventeenth-century manor house's original architecture, but also mixing in modernist décor and designs.
My room was very comfortable, but larger, plusher rooms split over two levels are available. In the rooms, as in the communal areas, the Art Deco and Bauhaus influences are obvious, with Mackintosh style motifs dotted about, and chunky, modern furnishings like the beautiful caramel-coloured leather sofas in the salon.
Sun worshippers can indulge their passion by the pool, or up on the roof terrace, which looks out on to the mountains that form Garachico's impressive backdrop. Be warned, though, the weather in the north of the island is notoriously less clement than in other parts of Tenerife - it rained during my stay in early January. The serene San Roque is not somewhere I'd recommend for anyone who wants to do more than eat tapas and chill out, but it is the perfect place to stay for those wanting a very relaxing or romantic break.
