Las Casas del Rey de Baeza

A former Andalucian palace with cobbled courtyard, dark wood interior and warm yellow colours creates one of Seville's most luxurious hotels.

Since the introduction of the express train from Madrid (in a stunning two hours), Seville has stepped into modern times. It was the Seville Expo, in 1992, that thrust the former capital city into a limelight formerly reserved only for its high-profile Easter Week celebrations, but the white-washed alleys, orange blossom-strewn streets and biggest Gothic cathedral in the world, make it a fine urban weekend location at any time.

Las Casas del Rey lies in the heart of the highly desirable Barrio Santa Cruz, the most extensively renovated part of town. A 44-bedroom, five-star hotel that's a brisk walk to the city centre, this building, with its elegant white and ochre façade, simply cries out to the comfort-seeking traveller on a search for Golden Age Spain. The white, blue and yellow interior is immaculate, with potted plants tastefully decorating every corner. The whole place is as bright as a Van Gogh sunflower and this muted brilliance reeks of tasteful, Iberian executives secretly longing to burst into Flamenco routines.

The old-fashioned rooms with their wrought-iron furniture, soft white cushions and dark wooden floors ooze antique comfort and many rooms have views of the old square. Guests congregate in the ceramic and dark wood dining room with its cosy fire, antique books and deluxe tapas menu and, frankly, why wouldn't they?
