If you're looking for a laid-back hideaway, head for Casa Tegoyo, a rustic rural retreat in the heart of Lanzarote. Often used as a backdrop for fashion photo shoots, the casa provides an intimate, informal setting where guests chat freely to one another over breakfast.
A thirty-minute drive from Arecife airport, Casa Tegoyo is a restored hacienda tucked away in the rocky hill country near the village of Conil. It opened its doors as a hotel in August 1999, and was previously owned by the Stinga family. Don Domingo Stinga purchased the property in 1804, when it was a derelict stable, and constructed a home for his beautiful young bride. According to legend, he was so fiercely jealous that he couldn't bear any man to look at his wife, so Senor Stinga built underground tunnels, linking the house to the private chapel, and insisted that the windows facing the village road were always shuttered.
Visitors to the modern casa won't find it quite so claustrophobic. The main two-storey house, comprising the restaurant, reception and most of the rooms, is built around a spacious courtyard, overhung by trees that provide shade from the glorious Canarian sunshine. The different rooms have décor inspired by a range of distinctive styles; cool Mediterranean, classical Moroccan as well as typically Canarian. The main house, by contrast, is built chiefly from creaky old rich brown timber, giving the place a warm, rustic feel.
The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating and there's an impressive degree of trust displayed by the team, who allow guests to help themselves to the bar after hours, so long as they note down what they drink.
Part of the casa's charm is its seclusion, but should you get bored lounging by the pool, most of Lanzarote is no more than thirty minutes drive away.
