A romantic boutique hotel in a medieval village, just 45 minutes from Girona airport, offering creative local cuisine, personal service and modern comforts in evocative historic surroundings.

Owners Clara and Joan fell in love with the listed Palacete de Begur (built 1866) at first sight, and have stayed faithful to their love by transforming it into a sensitively converted, family-run boutique hotel. The house was built by local people who'd made their fortune in Cuba in the 19th century, and the architecture echoes that of the island.

The traditional, colonial look of the house with parchment lampshades and teak and cane furniture in the restaurant, has been complemented by locally bought antiques in the bedrooms. More up-to-date touches have been added to the décor, with burnt orange walls, crisp white bed linen and modern artworks. Of the eight rooms, two are suites with terraces; all have original tiled floors, heavy wooden doors and floor-to-ceiling windows. Part of the hotel's restaurant is in a romantic, canopy-draped pagoda. In sunny weather this is opened up to the garden with its enormous 100-year-old cherry tree, a cloud of blossom in spring.

The menu gives a fresh modern twist to traditional Catalan and Mediterranean dishes; chose from dishes like the turbot with wild mushroom risotto and homemade sausage, or spatchcock chicken with crayfish and potatoes marinated in olive oil. Drag yourself from the table to explore Begur’s jumble of cobbled streets, or climb up to the town's crumbling medieval castle for fantastic views of the coast.

The town of Begur is slightly inland, with the bay of Aiguablava, an idyllic thumbnail of sand surrounded by high cliffs, a few minutes' drive away. In summer (July-Sept) a local bus runs between town and beaches every half hour.
