Hotel Arena

Stay out of the tourist traps and get a real slice of Amsterdam's lively night scene at Hotel Arena.

Hotel Arena is a sprawling, minimalist hotel and, although it is a 15 minute tram ride from the city centre's rouge-coloured alleyways, it is definitely where the party's at.

Situated in one of the most run down areas of Amsterdam, the Arena is not for those who like hotels in the midst of beautiful surroundings. From the outside the Arena looks like it could still be an orphanage, from which it was converted to a hostel, and then a hotel, over 20 years ago. However, step through the main gates and you are faced with a stunning glass-walled bar, lit with primary coloured cubes and a mosaic-covered bar.

After checking into our gorgeous, if not a little too minimalist room, all there was left to do is plan our big night out. But if you want to experience the best of Amsterdam's bar and club scene you won't need to leave the hotel. At least one night of your stay should be spent at the uber-trendy "The Drink" bar followed by the nightclub - built inside the magnificent old chapel. Hotel Arena is one of Amsterdam's places to be seen in.

The Arena is the only hotel in the Netherlands which has a restaurant, bar and club all under one roof, and although that could make for a manic hotel, I never felt nor did it sound, like my room was next to a nightclub.

If you like trendy décor, a young and fashionable crowd, informal staff and don't mind being slightly outside the city centre, you will love the Hotel Arena.

Room rates : You can pay from €100 for a small double in the low season, up to €175 for a large double in high season. The hotel also has triple rooms suitable for families or groups of friends who want to save money, they cost from €140.

Rooms to ask for : Rooms along C corridor have a mezzanine level bedroom and French windows that open out onto a lovely courtyard, perfect for chilling out on a summer's day.
