Jnane Tamsna

Located just outside the ancient heart of the city and surrounded by palm trees, Jnane Tamsna is a luxurious six-acre estate where guests relax in style.

A thirty-minute cab ride from Marrakech airport is the prestigious La Palmaraie district, home to some of the country's wealthiest residents. Appropriately located in such a well-to-do area is Jnane Tamsna, run by interior designer Meryanne Loum-Martin, and her husband, Gary-Martin.

Meryanne is chiefly responsible for Jnane Tamsna's chic, elegant and simple design. The estate's main house is built around a spacious courtyard, surrounded by Moorish arches and dotted with fragrant shrubbery. As well as a restaurant and opulent communal salon, there are ten rooms off the courtyard, all with walls of tadlakt, the traditional and beautifully smooth Moroccan plaster finish. There's a feeling of coolness and space, but the furnishings provide colour and comfort so that it doesn't feel too sparse.

Away from the main house, a short way down the drive, are two pools and a complex of five more spacious and sumptuous suites, each with signature themes that have inspired the layout and furnishings. The Persian Room is decorated in the ancient civilisation's traditional blue and gold colours.

Walking up the pathway, flanked by twinkling lanterns, I was immediately struck by the serenity of the place. Jnane Tamsna is somewhere to recharge your batteries. You can enjoy yoga sessions, cooking classes or even book a massage if you want the stress pummelled out of you, with the estate's extensive aromatic orchards and organic vegetable gardens as the perfect backdrop.

But all that lounging can get dull. Tamsna has tennis courts if that's your thing, but there really isn't much else to do in La Palmaraie. Thankfully the medina is on hand with markets, day and night, cafes and lively locals who'll provide all the entertainment you could need.
