Whitewashed caves built around the pool with the ultimate Greek island view
This is the kind of hotel that gets regularly featured on the front cover of Conde Nast Traveller, and quite rightly so.
It's built around a set of caves, which were continuously inhabited for 300 years by local fishermen but have now been transformed into 16 luxury 'homes' using traditional methods and local, volcanic material.
Whitewashed entrances lead into vaulted rooms, which occasionally smell sulphurous but which are decorated in perfectly stylish minimalism. The overall effect is so photogenic that it seems almost untrue.
The rooms - and the views - are glaringly white and blue, the beds are super soft and each cave has its own gorgeously appointed sitting room. I was only persuaded to emerge from mine in order to sample the super-indulgent buffet breakfast and then lounge around the hotel's prize boast - the 'infinity' pool.
Here, the aquamarine water seems to lead into an endless distance, and as I floated I imagined myself slipping effortlessly out to sea. At sunset, the effect was even more spectacular and it really seemed like heaven. Until I saw the bill...
The estate is only open from April until October so every cave was occupied - principally by Americans talking about how much it all cost. I found the overall effect quite extravagantly overwhelming and had to go for just a little more flotation therapy.
