Hotel Pavillon de Paris

A stylish, chic retreat for the young - or young at heart - in a once notorious, now hip district of Paris.

A half-hour cab ride from the Eurostar terminal in the up-and-coming Pigalle district of Paris, Hotel Pavillon is the chic boutique hotel favoured by the well-heeled city break visitor.

Seriously stylish, Pavillon favours a minimalist, clean-lined interior, but the warm cream, white and chocolate-brown colour scheme helps to keep things cosy, and the fact that there are only thirty rooms adds to the intimate feel.

The entrance area is sprinkled with oriental influences, such as the giant golden Buddha in the lounge. (This room, incidentally, sometimes doubles as a gallery space. During my visit, preparations were being made for a small photographic exhibition - I might have found it disruptive, but I was actually pleased to get a look at some fantastic artwork.)

Forget any preconceptions about Parisians being stand-offish - staff at Pavillon are friendly and attentive, without being over-familiar or overbearing. Most of them speak English very well, as they're used to entertaining an international clientele - at breakfast on my first morning I got chatting to two young Australian entrepreneurs (and eavesdropped on two American guests...).

Talking of breakfast, this is the only meal served in the hotel and is, naturally, a continental affair. In central Paris, though, you won't struggle to find a decent eatery. Round the corner from the hotel is the world-famous Moulin Rouge, and the romantic Montmatre area is also nearby.

For a less touristy, trendier taste of Paris, check out the bars in Pigalle, an area once famed for its red light district that is now finding favour with fashionable locals.

Room rates : Singles: €195 - €230, doubles: €245 - €285, breakfast: €15
