La Riboto de Taven

From Alastair Sawday’s Special Places to Stay French Hotels, Chateaux and Inns

Have you stayed here? Write a review.

Ever slept in a cave? In a bed with ornate cover and hangings, with a luxurious bathroom next door? Well, here you can.

The Novi-Thème family - Christine, Philippe and Jean-Pierre - have farmed in the Val d'Enfer (which translates as the Valley of Hell, although it would look more like heaven to most people) for four generations and still produce olive oil, fruit and wine.

Their property is literally built into the limestone cliff facing the spectacular cliff-top village of Les Baux de Provence, The two 'troglodyte' suites are separate from the rest of the house. The other rooms and the apartment are in the 18th century mas facing the garden. You can walk up stone steps from the garden to a terrace, where the view is even more amazing.

There was an olive oil mill here in the 17th century. Now you have Mireille or Vincent with the canopied bed, beautiful furniture handed down through generations and the overhang of the rock face forming half the ceiling. The garden is small but beautiful, with a pool, and the welcome is warm. Children over ten are welcome.
